World Cancer Day, started on February 4, 2000 at the World Summit Against Cancer (held in Paris), is an initiative of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). This international observance aims to ease the global burden of cancer by raising awareness and education about cancer and promoting more equitable access to care.

Cancer is the second biggest cause of death worldwide, after cardiovascular disease. The global cancer incidence is growing. In 2021, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 20 million people were diagnosed with cancer, and 10 million died. The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimated that there will be about 1,918,030 new cancer cases and 609,360 cancer deaths in the country in 2022.
