ICD-10 Code freeze has ended

The last regular update of ICD-9 and ICD-10 was four years ago! Yes, ICD-10 was successfully implemented October 1, 2015 but it was virtually the same as the draft version, with limited updates to capture new technologies and diseases such as the new Zika virus (A92.5). The freeze ended October 1, 2016.

A total of 1,943 new ICD-10-CM were released by the CDC and 3,651 new ICD-10-PCS codes were released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). In addition to the new ICD-10-CM codes, 422 codes were revised and 305 were deleted.

Some of the areas with changes include:
  • Hemorrhage, seroma and hematoma changes in many chapters
  • New neoplasm codes
  • Specificity in eye disease codes
  • Expansion of mental health codes
  • Hypertensive crisis addition
  • Specificity in cerebral infarctions and sequeale
  • Expansion of arterial dissection codes
  • New codes for GI vascular disorders and pancreatitis
  • New type of nontraumatic fracture codes
  • Changes to placenta previa codes
  • Changes to coding newborns suspected to be affected by maternal conditions
  • Expansion of congenital anomaly codes
  • Addition of NIHSS stroke scale codes
  • Return of codes for endoscopic procedures converted to open procedures
